It is a TAX. No question about that fact.
The $5 co-payment is irrelevant now because of Pharmac's success in driving down the costs of medicines. When medicines were more expensive it made people think about the need to access everything on prescription. Now that dynamic is gone. Instead it discriminates against a small section of the population now that the free fees have been extended beyond the original under 6's.
Access would be improved to mental health treatments and university students if this tax was removed.
I suggest abolish it as soon as possible.
