Diabetes New Zealand Research Foundation (DNZRF) is pleased to announce applications are soon to open for its 2024 research fellowship.

This new fellowship will be available to both clinical and non-clinical health professionals and offers support for research directly related to diabetes in New Zealand.

Applications are open from 1 February 2024, and close on 5 April 2024 at 12pm.

Accessible from June 2024, the fellowship is expected to provide significant results directly related to DNZRF’s mission to end the significant harm caused by diabetes in New Zealand.

“Our goal is to fund vital research that enables people with all types of diabetes to live well, and to support the careers of New Zealand researchers,” says DNZRF Chairman Sir Ralph Norris.

“Health research changes lives. It’s critical to ensuring we have the knowledge and tools to provide the best possible healthcare for New Zealanders – now and into the future.”

The fellowship is designed to provide support to researchers in a health delivery research team, health sector setting or health delivery policy setting.

The research must have the potential to directly inform changes to practice, systems and/or health delivery policy, as well as demonstrate a clear connection to a healthcare need for people at risk of or living with diabetes in New Zealand.

The maximum total possible value of the fellowship is up to $150,000 including all associated salary costs. The funding offers a salary based on the applicant’s qualifications and research experience, with an additional $20,000 contribution toward direct costs of the research. The successful applicant will be funded full-time for 12 months or part-time for up to 36 months if requested.

“We look forward to seeing some innovative proposals with the vision to improve the quality of life for those living with diabetes in New Zealand.” says DNZRF Chairman Sir Ralph Norris.

Applicants are expected to hold a minimum of an undergraduate degree and five years’ cumulative experience in studying, training or working in the health sector or health delivery research setting. Additionally, the applicant and/or supervisor is expected to be a member of Society for the Study of Diabetes (NZSSD) and must meet the New Zealand Health Research Attributes.
