Consumers reminded to check paracetamol use

Consumer healthcare products industry body, the New Zealand Self-Medication Industry (SMI), today reminded consumers that over-the-counter analgesics, like paracetamol, should only be taken at the lowest possible dose for the shortest possible time. If pain persists, consumers should seek the advice of a healthcare professional.

This was in response to recent media reports claiming that paracetamol is an ineffective form of pain relief which has the potential to harm. These reports are largely related to people who have overdosed or abused the medicine.

SMI executive director Scott Milne says: “Paracetamol has been used in New Zealand for many years and, based on a large body of research, is an effective form of pain relief and has a well-established safety profile.

“Paracetamol overdoses are deeply concerning, and the industry is committed to adopting best practice in all aspects of analgesic use to minimise the risk of overdose.

“All medicines have risks. These risks need to be carefully weighed against the risks of not treating pain or fever. Consumers are therefore reminded to follow the label instructions and to discuss pain relief options with their healthcare professional,” Mr Milne adds.

All products containing paracetamol contain warnings on the pack in relation to maximum dose, duration of use and actions to take if an overdose is taken or suspected.
