Medtech Global’s sponsorship of the GP of the Year Award in the 2025 New Zealand Primary Healthcare Awards | He Tohu Mauri Ora spotlights the critical work GPs do keeping Kiwis healthy, says CEO Geoffrey Sayer.
Why is Medtech Global sponsoring the Primary Healthcare Awards?
Primary care is the first place most of us turn to when we need care. The essential community care GPs provide helps us enjoy healthier lives and relieves pressure on the wider health system. Sponsoring these awards shines a light on the incredible work of primary care teams.
What is Medtech Global’s key area of involvement in primary care?
For over 30 years, Medtech has worked alongside healthcare professionals to design technology that makes it easier to run a practice. Whether we help save time in a consultation, automate accounting admin or deliver diagnostic reports in real-time, our goal is simple: less paperwork and better patient care. Our standards-based healthcare API ALEX was a first in New Zealand and facilitates seamless, better-co-ordinated and more effective patient care.
What interests you personally about the category Medtech Global is sponsoring?
The GP of the Year Award highlights something I truly believe – better healthcare starts with strong, well-supported practices with three key elements: the human side of healthcare, a sustainable funding model and the power of technology. After decades in this field, I’m still amazed at the difference technology can make to GPs’ lives, helping them focus on what matters most – caring for patients – while making it possible for them to knock off at a reasonable time. Looking after primary care is about looking after the people who work in it, and I am delighted to have this opportunity to celebrate our GPs, the heroes of the healthcare system.
What do you hope this sponsorship will achieve for the entrants in this category?
GPs are critical in keeping New Zealanders healthy while grappling with enormous personal, financial and professional
challenges. This recognition is about celebrating the excellence and dedication of the entrants, and I hope our sponsorship spotlights the case for improved funding. But most of all, it will convey the thanks and appreciation we owe the GPs in all our communities.
What is a great experience you have had in primary care that you can share with us?
Witnessing the dedication and extraordinary care provided by community-based practices like Te Whare Hauora o Raungaiti Trust in Waharoa has given me a real appreciation for what committed healthcare leaders can achieve. Despite their pressures, their commitment to finding sustainable ways to serve their community while consistently delivering care for people forgotten by others exemplifies the power of determined leadership in primary care.
How would you describe the sector in three words?
Dedicated, selfless, expert.
What would you choose if you were asked to name a popular song as the anthem for primary care?
Revolution (The Beatles).
