CareHQ - Stellar supporter of outstanding contribution to health

CareHQ is sponsoring the Outstanding Contribution to Health Award in the 2025 New Zealand Primary Healthcare Awards | He Tohu Mauri Ora. CareHQ’s CEO Brett Butler tells us what it means to be a Stellar supporter.
Why is CareHQ sponsoring the Primary Healthcare Awards?
As a business, we’re relative newbies, with only four years since we launched in 2020. But our team has hundreds
of years of collective primary health experience. Our sponsorship of this award is for all the fantastic clinicians who choose to work with us.
What is CareHQ’s key area of involvement in primary care?
CareHQ is a telehealth provider designed by GPs for GPs. We’re a non-enrolling practice, and we don’t charge clawbacks. We offer episodic support to unwell patients 365 days a year. Over 70 GPs and virtual practice nurses form the backbone of our clinic, delivering consults nationwide, including low-cost access practice support and subsidised care for high-needs groups. Our practice partners use us when their own GPs are unavailable and after-hours, with our services easily accessible to patients via ManageMyHealth, My Indici or the MySouthernCross app.
What interests you personally about the category CareHQ is sponsoring?
The current primary health challenges are well-documented, but we must keep moving forward. This happens largely due to the dedication and passion of primary health champions who consistently go above and beyond, identifying issues and creating solutions.
What do you hope this sponsorship will achieve for the entrants in this category?
Well-deserved recognition and the chance to shine the spotlight on their work. For the finalists, it’s an opportunity for their team to celebrate, and we hope to create new networking and business collaborations. We hope the award will inspire others to follow.
What great experience have you had in primary care that you can share with us?
It has been so rewarding being able to provide our GPs with the chance to achieve a better work–life balance. They can work from home as well as in practice and are able to work from anywhere in New Zealand (or overseas) with the support of strong clinical processes and governance. This has meant we’ve retained GPs, who otherwise would have been lost to New Zealanders. A highlight for me personally was a recent comment in our GP workforce survey where one of the team stated, “Working at CareHQ has put some of the joy back into seeing patients.”
How would you describe the sector in three words?
Compassionate, resourceful, dedicated.
If you were asked to name a popular song as the anthem for primary care, what would you choose?
Under Pressure (Queen).
