GenPro’s sponsorship of the General Practice of the Year Award in the 2025 New Zealand Primary Healthcare Awards | He Tohu Mauri Ora highlights its unwavering commitment to recognising the vital role of practice teams. Angus Chambers, GenPro chair, explains what it means to be a Stellar Supporter.
Why is GenPro sponsoring the Primary Healthcare Awards?
To recognise the amazing mahi general practice undertakes daily. While every practice is doing it hard, it is nice to be part of something that celebrates the essential role of specialist GPs and their teams.
What is GenPro’s key area of involvement in primary care?
We advocate tirelessly for better terms and conditions for general practice owners and their teams and represent the owners and employers in negotiations. Our “why” is that all New Zealanders have timely access to high-quality general practice services.
What interests you personally about the category GenPro is sponsoring?
Well-functioning general practice is the bedrock of a high-performing health system, and we need to recognise the value of this for our communities.
What do you hope this sponsorship will achieve for the entrants in this category?
Recognition and validation. It is tough right now, and this celebration recognises those succeeding in difficult circumstances.
What great experience have you had in primary care that you can share with us?
Our members’ teams make a difference in people’s lives every day. Preventing diseases, referring people who are unwell for urgent treatment, and diagnosing cancers early. Addressing the needs of people who come out of hospital less than optimally treated. Providing a support place for those troubled by poor mental health and those who are lonely and unsupported. This list is long.
How would you describe the sector in three words?
Underrated, underfunded and undervalued.
What would you choose if you were asked to name a popular song as the anthem for primary care?
We are the champions (Queen).
