PHO Total Healthcare Charitable Trust is co-sponsoring the Research and Education Award in the 2025 New Zealand Primary Healthcare Awards | He Tohu Mauri Ora, with general practice network Tāmaki Health. Mark Vella, Total Healthcare’s CEO, explains what it means to be a Stellar Supporter.

Why is Total Healthcare sponsoring the primary healthcare awards?

We support excellence, innovation and collaboration in the sector so naturally we were compelled to support these wonderful awards.

What is Total Healthcare’s key area of involvement in primary care?

We are a primary healthcare organisation serving more than 260,000 patients in Auckland, many of whom are high needs. Our mahi aims to improve quality of life, and equity in outcomes for Māori and other communities with inequities. We are the largest provider of primary healthcare to Pacific peoples in south Auckland.

What is it that interests you personally about the category Total Healthcare is sponsoring?

Excellence in research and education programmes is crucial to improving services and patient care, particularly for underserved and hard-to-reach communities. We are proud to sponsor this category given the amazing impact this mahi has for patients.

What do you hope this sponsorship will achieve for the entrants in this category?

It is a fantastic way to shine a light on the incredible work that quietly goes on behind-the-scenes in primary care but has life-changing impacts. We hope it will inspire entrants to acknowledge their achievements and consider future opportunities.

What is a great experience you have had in primary care that you can share with us?

It is wonderful working for a PHO board committed to commissioning innovative initiatives that improve access to healthcare for our patients of highest need. This spans medical, psychological and social determinants of health.

There have been some tough times for primary care in recent times. How would you describe the sector in three words?

Responsive to challenges.

If you were asked to name a popular song as the anthem for primary care, what would you chose?

It ain’t what you do it’s the way that you do it (Fun Boy Three & Bananarama).
