The Pharmacy Council has removed a controversial change from its revised code of ethics that would have made it ethical for pharmacists to promote products not backed up by evidence of efficacy.
The Office of the Health and Disability Commissioner released two reports in July that were critical of pharmacists over dispensing errors in two unrelated incidents.
No change has been made to the classification of codeine, but the Medicines Classification Committee (MCC) has posed some questions to the sector that it must answer if some codeine products are to remain pharmacist-only.
A pharmacist has raised concerns that non-eligible patients are receiving subsidised medicines, and it remains unclear where the responsibility lies in checking who is eligible.
